The other day I was downloading our office softwares for reproducing a customer
issue. But the as soon as I click on download item, and click save, the Save As dialog
did nothing but just stood there showing 0% completed dialog and the other file/folder selection dialog.
I tried with several other files on from Internet explorer, results were same. I had
to kill IE sessions from task manager. Some how I couldn't click to figure what was going on. So started with google search and found most of forums/community discussions talking about clearing the contents of following registry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute
Unfortunately on my win xp sp3, i did not have this key :(
But then this ignited bulb on top of my head and gave me the direction --> the last download which I did was on network shared computer, and which was now switched off. But then how I could find where
settings are stored to find last downloaded file. Simple now it was, started with registry, opened up my toolbox, fired regmon.exe, setup IE as filter, reproduce the issue and quickly got hold of this :
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer-->Download Directory
cleared this and set to nothing, but it still hangs!!
Given a proper path like c:\temp, and voila, it works without a hang!!
Well regmon saved my time!!! thanks a ton to sysinternals..
cheers
